Lapworth Players

History

History

Two television stars , Graham Weston and Pamela Greenall ,from the 1960 s Crossroads soap gave a big boost to the formation a new drama group set up in Lapworth 1968 .They agreed to become president and vice president in March 1968.The main force however at work behind the formation of The Lapworth Players was , Pat Cheetham who that year had moved into Lapworth village . She invited four others from the village all keen to set up a local amateur drama group .

A one act play was presented in the Village Hall.  The first time a straightforward play was performed in the fairly new village hall .Starting from scratch the back stage crew had to beg , steal and borrow timber and paint for scenery and temporary stage lighting cobbled together !
How things have changed over the next fifty five plus years . The Lapworth Players are now proud of an excellent stock of props , specialist lighting and sound equipment ,some fantastic costumes and two large outbuildings at the hall which are well stocked with scenery , platforms to provide for raked  seating to the rear of the hall and a portable specialist rostra to extend forward the main stage .

A wide range of plays and pantomimes have been performed over the years, including…..

  • Pygmalion
  • The Importance of being Earnest
  • A child’s Christmas in Wales
  • Stepping Out
  • Calendar Girls
  • Outside Edge
  • A Christmas Carol
  • A chorus of disapproval
  • Dads Army
To name but a few .
A great local drama group with a proud history .
